Description

A natural-born performer — now at full stage scale.

With tail feathers shaped like a musical instrument and the vocal range of a pop star, the Superb Lyrebird is one of nature’s greatest showmen. Known for mimicking chainsaws, camera shutters and car alarms, this forest-dwelling mimic has a talent for turning heads — and this sculpture is no exception.

At nearly A2 in size, this is one of the largest birds in the Metalbird flock — and it makes a dramatic entrance wherever it’s installed. The silhouette captures the Lyrebird’s extravagant tail, confident pose, and all the flair that makes it a true icon of the Australian bush.

Better still? 10% of all sales support BirdLife Australia, helping protect threatened native birds and the habitats they call home.

This one deserves a solid stage.

  1. Select a firm surface like compacted soil, timber decking, or a garden stump.
  2. Hold the piece securely at a downward angle to maximise strength.
  3. Tap the stake gently but firmly with a hammer or mallet until the base is flush.
  4. Double-check stability to ensure it won't shift due to wind or movement.
  5. Rotate the silhouette to highlight its tail from your most-viewed angle.

Top Tip: For extra hold on hard ground, pre-drill a pilot hole or wedge into a timber block, and this piece deserves a spotlight — literally. Uplight it at night for maximum drama.

How big is it really?
It’s our second largest bird — close to A2 in size and about 60cm tall. It makes a strong statement in any setting.

Will it rust or wear out?
It’s made from weathering steel, which develops a protective, rust-like patina designed to last outdoors.

Does it come in a gift box?
Due to its size, it's shipped wrapped in protective bubble wrap instead of a standard Metalbird box.

Is this based on a real bird?
Yes — it’s modelled after the male Superb Lyrebird, native to Australia’s southeast.

Does it support bird conservation?
Yes! 10% of proceeds go directly to BirdLife Australia.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.

what’s the word on the bird?
