Description

Not an owl — but just as wise.

The Tawny Frogmouth is often mistaken for an owl, but it’s actually a member of the nightjar family. With mottled feathers that look like bark and a habit of going still during the day, this master of disguise is one of Australia’s most fascinating birds.

Our silhouette captures the Frogmouth’s perched shape and observant gaze. Whether installed on a post, nestled in foliage, or watching over your veggie patch, it brings a dose of quiet magic to your outdoor space.

Blend it into your garden like the bird itself.

  1. Pick a timber post or garden edge with some shade.
  2. Hold at a downward angle to mimic its resting posture.
  3. Tap the stake with a hammer or mallet until secure.
  4. Nestle into foliage or branches for a camouflaged effect.
  5. Adjust angle to catch the light and reveal its shape.

Top Tip: Looks extra special nestled into eucalypts or grey-leafed natives.

Is this an owl?
No — Tawny Frogmouths are more closely related to nightjars, not true owls.

Why is it called a Frogmouth?
Its beak is wide and flat like a frog’s — perfect for catching insects in flight.

Does it need protection from rain?
No. It’s made from weathering steel designed for outdoor use.

Will it scare real birds away?
No — it’s a peaceful presence and safe for backyard ecosystems.

Is it safe for balconies or pots?
Yes. Just ensure a solid base or use a pre-drilled timber block.

Each Metalbird is crafted from Corten® Steel, a premium, weathering steel made to last.

When it meets the elements, it doesn’t rust like your old BBQ. It transforms.

That change you’re seeing? That’s patina. A tough, protective outer layer that seals the steel, adds character, and preserves your bird for decades.

This isn’t paint. It’s nature’s way of ageing gracefully.

The Patina Process:

At first, you’ll notice bright orange spots (we call this the teenage phase). Soon enough, the whole bird will turn a bold orange, slowly shifting into deep burnt umber. Eventually, it settles into a moody charcoal that feels like it’s always belonged.

The Result? A piece of industrial art with a heartbeat. No peeling, no fading, just a bird that gets better with age.
